Before replacing the catalytic converter, inspect the oxygen sensors and exhaust system for leaks. An exhaust leak upstream of the catalytic converter may trigger DTC P0420 even if the converter is functioning properly. Always verify the repair by clearing the DTC and performing a complete drive cycle.
